Fall colours at Shenandoah National Park & Hike Bear’s Den Overlook!

Updated: Aug 26, 2020

Shenandoah National Park

A drive through Skyline Drive, the 169km road that traverses the length of Shenandoah National Park, stopping at the various overlooks is the best way to experience what the park has to offer when you are on a time crunch.

From early October the trees start changing colour, and it is beautiful to see the spattering of reds and yellows in between the green carpeted mountains.

Bear’s Den Overlook

It offers a beautiful view of the Shenandoah Valley from a rugged rock formation on the Appalachian trail in Bluemont, Virginia. There are two parallel formations of rock which are split by a dirt path.

My Herschel Backpack accompanied me all through my travels in the USA. I had a few people ask me about the backpack, so I'm leaving a link to it here!

The bag is functional & light, perfect for my travels!

It is a great spot to picnic with your loved ones- weekends are busy with families.

The expansive view of the Shenandoah Valley grants you a spectacular sunset, and it is nice to just sit and enjoy the view.

But it gets dark fast, so keep your phone’s flashlight handy for your hike back to your car.

How easy/difficult is the hike?

The hike to the overlook can be chosen to suit different interests, fitness levels, and available time.

The easiest hike which I took, is from the Bear’s Den Day Use parking area will take about 10 mins. The trail is marked, and the route is easy, through a dirt path that starts from the parking area.

Is Bear's Den Pet Friendly?

The trail and overlook are pet friendly, so this is an outing your four legged friends can be a part of!
